UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., April 13, 2006 - More than 80 members of the Penn State Football team are expected to compete in the Fourth Annual Penn State Football Lift For Life Challenge on Friday, July 14. The event will take place from 2-7 p.m. in Holuba Hall adjacent to the Lasch Football Building.

Founded by Penn State Football teammates in 2003, Lift For Life continues to build awareness and raise donations for the Kidney Cancer Association, a charity representing a medically under-served cause. The first three Lift For Life events have raised more than $80,000 for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney cancer.

Lift For Life is a strength and conditioning competition during which the squad breaks into teams of four and competes in a series of 11 challenges. The events range from more traditional exercises like bench press to more extreme challenges like the 200-lb. plate carry and giant tire flip.

The event is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 per person or $25 per family. Fans will have a chance to meet and get autographs from current and former members of the Penn State Football team.

Benefiting from the experience of professional development and social responsibility, current squad members Darien Hardy, Jason Ganter, Mark Rubin, and Kevin Suhey, football manager Matt Workman, as well as Penn State students Mark Mihalik and Greg Lisa, are the primary organizers of the event. Ninety-six players including fan favorites Michael Robinson, Alan Zemaitis, Paul Posluzny, plus true freshman Justin King and Derrick Williams have volunteered to compete. Penn State football fans can share in the Lift For Life excitement all week long with the launch of interactive media now available at www.psuliftforlife.org . Fans can enter the Fantasy Competition by selecting their own team to see how their talent evaluation skills compare to others and discuss their strategy on the discussion board. They can also vote for their favorite team in the Lift For Life poll and shop the new online store that features Lift For Life apparel and memorabilia. The website will also host an audio webcast during the July 15th event that will include live player interviews and updates on the competition.

The second annual competition will be held Thursday, July 8 from 2-9 p.m. in Holuba Hall. As of this morning, more than $15,000 has been raised for the Kidney Cancer Association, with the event already eclipsing the $13,000 raised at last year's inaugural competition.

The public is invited to watch the Nittany Lions and compete in 11 events designed to test mental and physical toughness. The exercises for the competitors will range from the ordinary (bench press) to the extreme (giant tire flip).

A donation of $10 for an individual or $25 per family will gain fans admittance to the event, as well as an opportunity to meet and get autographs from the members of the more than 20 four-person teams that are expected to compete. "Lift For Life" T-shirts, raffle tickets and concessions will be sold throughout the day. Staff members from the Kidney Cancer Association also will be in attendance.

Additional teams may join the 22 squads that are competing.

Among the items to be auctioned off at "Lift For Life" is a football autographed by more than 20 Heisman Trophy winners, including Penn State's John Cappelletti, who sent the ball to event organizers. Among the other Heisman winners that have signed the ball are: Tony Dorsett, Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier, Howard "Hopalong" Cassady, Gino Toretta, George Rogers, Steve Owens and Johnny Lattner. The ball comes with a certificate of authenticity and will be available during the silent auction Thursday.

The Nittany Lion mascot will be making appearances throughout the day and door prizes will be awarded hourly. In addition, raffle tickets will be sold for $5.00 with an opportunity to win a $7,000 hot tub from PDC Spas, an electric scooter, free one night stays at several local hotels and other items.

All contributors of $10 or more to the "Lift For Life" will be gain free attendance to the event and have their name listed on the new website, www.psuliftforlife.org. Donors are eligible to win tickets to Penn State football games, autographed PSU footballs and basketballs and Lift For Life T-shirts.

Larger donation levels prior to Thursday will provide the opportunity for floor passes to the "Lift For Life" competition, tickets to the founder's brunch on Thursday at the Nittany Lion Inn, featuring

Jerry Sandusky, Bryan Scott, and other former Nittany Lions players, personal tours of the football facilities and a plaque with a picture of the donor and members of the Penn State football team.

Advance ticket sales and more information on the "Lift For Life" are available at the Student Book Store Wednesday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Donations and pledges are being accepted online at www.psuliftforlife.org.

Fans attending "Lift For Life" can park in the lots designated for Arts Festival for $5.00 until 4 p.m. or in metered lots on campus. After 4:00, parking is free in lots designated for Arts Festival.

A donation of $10 for an individual or $25 per family will gain fans admittance to the event, as well as an opportunity to meet and get autographs from the members of the more than 20 four-person teams that are expected to compete. The "Penn State Lift For Life" includes some traditional weightlifting events such as bench press, chin-ups and leg press, as well as some more extreme events like the giant tire flip and a 200-yard sprint, carrying 100-pound plates in either hand.

This Saturday, "Lift For Life" volunteers will be set-up in four locations to promote awareness and collect donations, with two stations outside Beaver Stadium, one at the Creamery and one outside the Student Book Store.

Four downtown restaurants -- Beulah's BBQ, Roly Poly, Jimmy John's and Highway Pizza -- have all pledged to donate a portion of their profits to "Lift For Life" on Saturday.
